The world’s largest solar power plant is under construction in the capital of the United Arab Emirates

News from the UAE and Abu Dhabi: Speaking at a press briefing, the deputy chairman of the UAE Executive Council said that the capital’s emirate has begun building the world’s largest independent solar power plant.

The cost of the new station, called “Nur Abu Dhabi”, exceeds 3.2 billion dollars. At the same time, its capacity is 1 177 megawatts, which exceeds the largest competitors. Thus, solar power plants in India and the USA produce 648 and 550 MW, respectively.

It is noted that “Nur Abu Dhabi” will be built in Suwayhan, 120 kilometers southeast of the Emirate capital.

The project will be jointly implemented by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, the Japanese consortium Marubeni Corp and the international group of companies Silicon Module Super League. The start of operation of the solar power plant is expected in the second quarter of 2019.

Experts note that this giant project is part of the UAE policy aimed at diversifying energy sources and developing a low-carbon economy.

In accordance with its “Energy Strategy 2050”, Abu Dhabi plans to increase net energy: up to 7% by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050.
